Well how about this change for 2011, Fox Searchlight is to put a few of their movies who were nominated for SAG awards to it’s members for insta-viewing on iTunes. In a first for the industry, Fox Filmed Entertainment will make three current releases from its Fox Searchlight movie unit that were nominated for Screen Actors Guild awards — “Black Swan,” “127 Hours,” and “Conviction” — available as free downloads from Apple Inc.’s iTunes to all of the acting guild’s nearly 100,000 voting members. The move could mark the first step in an industry-wide shift toward making digital copies of movies available to voters for all awards, eventually ending the costly, time-honored practice of producing and sending physical copies of their DVDs. L.A. Times Yeah sure it’s a great way for them to save money on shipping to the thousand something members but in the end it’s just a faster way for the screeners to reach the the little people who choose to download movies rather than go to a theater. I am pretty sure Black Swan’s screener is already out in illegal circulation though, so maybe Fox doesn’t care? I think this way of circulating films during Award Season has been highly avoided because of the fear of illegal viewing being so much more easier to do. With the popularity of digital copy on Blu-Rays(where you can download movies to Itunes or Windows Media Player), maybe the other studios will follow Fox? I remember way back then when the music industry was so against iTunes and music being digitized but look how that turned out. Welcome to the 21st century.
