The 69th Golden Globes were handed out Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. While most of the buzz surrounding the show was whether or not Rocky Gervais would stick it to snobbish Hollywood actors(which he didn’t. ) there were some surprises (Meryl Streep winning her 298083 Globe statue, let someone else have a chance)and cheers ( Matt Leblanc finally won something!). The Golden Globes have always been seen as a blueprint to the Academy Awards and I think the this year will be one of those years where in some categories like Best Actress will be a fight to the finish with the likes of Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and Michelle Williams most likely guaranteed nominations. The other categories?, eh the Hollywood Foreign Press relied on their usuals as winners like Martin Scorseise, Kate Winselt and George Clooney. The most notable winners from last night is Octavia Spencer who won Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for ‘The Help’ and Idris Elba for his work in the Miniseries ‘Luther’. It’s hard enough for Black Actors to get work let alone win big awards so congratulations to Ms. Spencer and Mr. Elba. Honorable Mention: Laura Dern. I think she is one of those actors who are good but doesn’t always get public recognition. She won for Best Actress in a TV series/Comedy, good for her. Please Accept Your Award Then Graciously Sit Back Down: Madonna was her forever self-loving her. She has work so hard the past few months to make everyone accept her as a serious director, expect it was a win for Original Song not Best Director. Listening to her acceptance speech, you would have thought differently. She has that, I’m a director now for reals, Angelina Jolie syndrome. Hollywood Legends: Sidney Poitier and Helen Mirren presented Morgan Freeman with the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement.
I wanted to wait until the dust settle and the smoke cleared to write my 2 cents for the 2 people that read this blog about the Golden Globes that occurred Sunday. Regardless that the GG’s are dubbed as the “fun” award show of the season, I had no great expectations going into Sunday and that is just based on the nomination list that came out weeks earlier. The Tourist being nominated as many times as it was was the big clue that HFPA was just looking for higher ratings vs. quality show. And by inviting Ricky Gervais back was an even more obvious ploy it was and was always about ratings. The Golden Globes needed the higher viewing turn out after declining ratings as the years have gone on. And they finally got it but at what expense? Acting wise, which is suppose to be the real reason people watch this thing, in the major categories I was satisfied with the winners: Annette Beinning, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Paul Giamatti, Melissa Leo. As much as I love Johnny Depp and Jake Glynhaal their nominations were a big wtf. ‘The Kids Are Alright’ winning for best Comedy great, but The Social Network for Drama? Eh. Yeah everyone saw it, it was a good movie, ok whatever. I just can’t take a movie about Facebook seriously enough to be winning big awards like this especially over other films like Inception and The King’s Speech. And it won other categories like Screen Play and Director?!?!? As for the TV awards, eh didn’t really care, honestly there is no real good tv on nowadays. Did I mention I am not a Gleek. Now for Gervais. Some media sites are applauding him for sticking to self rightous Hollywood but come on he did cross a line a few times Sunday even if it is in front of the vainest of people. Now yes he did have some funny lines (Charlie Sheen, Sex and City, Hugh Hefner, Downey Jr.’s porn flicks) making fun of Jewish people, joking about the head of HPFA,Downey Jr.’s rehab stint(s) or the line at the end “Thank you God for making me a Atheist” were either too much or played out jokes. I literally cringed at his closing line. It was like he was trying way too hard, which I believe he admitted too. What is even funnier is reading Gervais trying to save his ass from the firing line the past two days. Yeah he can make these jokes but he is apart of the same business as he is joking about so you can only go so far as to biting the hand that feeds you. But Gervais wasn’t even the kicker of the night, there were two awkard moments that stand out to me. Robert Dinero’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille award and Robert Downey Jr.’s Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical presentation. Both were awkward, and probably so awkward it made them funny.First...

But Gervais wasn’t even the kicker of the night, there were two awkard moments that stand out to me. Robert Dinero’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille award and Robert Downey Jr.’s Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical presentation. Both were awkward, and probably so awkward it made them funny.First De Niro’s speech had some funny moments but it did get awkward when he talked about people getting deported which included members of the HFPA, waiters in the room and Javier Bardem. Check out Matt Damon’s face when he says it and how he was smiling but not wanting to laugh and looking at the audience to see there reaction.

I don’t think he was being and out right racist or even is a racist himself( his wife just happens to be black) just a poor taste in joke writing on his part.

Then Iron Man Mr. Robert Downey Jr. chose to be sexual with his presentation and the uproar was that he was inappropriate insinuating that actresses only make it by sleeping their way to the top. Some people liked it, some people didnt. I have seen paragraph rants about how he lacks respect for women or ‘his poor wife’. Downey Jr. has always had an eclectic sense of humor and with his wife being a major Hollywood producer who left being co-president of Silver Pictures to produce with her husband (you should familiar yourself with her if you don’t know her because she’s awesome) it’s a stretch to say he lacks respect for women, plus he worships his wife. It was just an awkward joke that only he could pull off. What made entire thing funny in the end and Downey Jr.’s saving face for himself is acknowledging that his wife was in the audience. But what really has creeped me out is the fans photoshopping the hell out of his “moment” with Emma Stone which I assume it’s done by the youngish fans who tuned in to watch Justin Bieber and don’t know any better. Yes girls he looks young enough for Ms. Stone but he’s been acting before she was born.

He did zing Gervais at the beginning though.

I think this was the oddest Golden Globes I have seen in while. Bravo HFPA. Job well done.
