"White Ribbon" Wins The Palme d'Or

CANNES — “The White Ribbon” was the star of the red carpet Sunday night as Michael Haneke’s black-and-white drama won the Festival de Cannes’ top honor, the coveted Palme d’Or. Jury president Isabelle Huppert presented Haneke with the prize at the traditional closing-night ceremony held in the Palais des Festivals, as the world’s most famous film festival wrapped its 12-day run. Huppert insisted on presenting the award herself, marking the first time a jury president has presented the prize since Clint Eastwood gave the award to Quentin Tarantino for “Pulp Fiction.” Jacques Audiard’s “A Prophet,” the critic favorite, was blessed with the festival’s prestigious Grand Prix. Willem Dafoe announced the award, before Audiard took the stage to receive his standing ovation. Andrea Arnold’s “Fish Tank” and Park Chan-Wook’s Korean vampire film “Thirst” shared the festival’s double Jury Prize, presented by Italian actress Laura Morante.

Pixar's 'UP' Officially Starts Cannes Film Festival '09

As reported here last month Disney/Pixar’s 3-d animation ‘Up’ kicked off the this years Cannes Film Festival.

The low-key ceremony stuck to tradition as Huppert’s jury — Asia Argento, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Lee Chang-dong, James Gray, Hanif Kureishi, Shu Qi, Robin Wright Penn and Sharmila Tagore — took their seats onstage.

The Palais red carpet sparkled with diamonds and a mix of celebrities that included actress Tilda Swinton, the L’Oreal spokesmodels and even French Cultural Minister Christine Albanel.

The opening ceremony, broadcast live by Gallic pay TV channel Canal Plus, was hosted by French funnyman Edouard Baer, who found plenty of material in the global financial crisis. The ceremony itself featured a montage of Huppert’s history with the Festival de Cannes and excerpts of films in the official selection.

As the lights dimmed in the Palais theater, Huppert talked about her vision for this year’s fest, reminding the audience that “We go to the movies to remember.”

Legendary French singer Charles Aznavour, the voice of the old man in the French version of “Up,” declared the 62nd edition of the fest officially open alongside Gallic actress Hafsia Herzi.

Pixar’s new animation flick ‘Up’ is set to make it’s world debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 13th. Also making it’s world debut is Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.
