Although it did not get great reviews ‘The Rite’ topped this weekend’s box office. The weekend numbers seem about right as I went to see the movie this weekend and for an opening movie there were alot of empty seats in the theater. There were also annoying teenagers screaming and jumping at the things on the screen that weren’t even scary. Anyway, I enjoyed the film and that it was pretty decent. It’s Anthony Hopkins being possessed by the devil, doesn’t get any better than that. There was a brief moment when I thought the film was going to go in the cheesy, predictable Hollywood direction, but it recovered very well. What I liked was that it wasn’t some off the wall ‘Exorcism’ antics type movie about people being possessed. It had the more grounded feel to it, more about religion and questioning one’s faith. That right there could be another factor as to why it did not really bring in big box office numbers. I liken it to 2010′s Book of Eli because it was another movie about religion that didn’t get the best buzz, but to me it was a solid film.
Happy Holidays! It was a very light affair at the Christmas box Office when it comes to new releases. Usually this time of year brings about numerous films vying for your holiday spirit, but this year it was a light affair. I guess Yogi Bear and Gulliver’s Travel could be seen as box office failures with neither winning over the kid audience. As much as I like Jack Black the best version of Gulliver’s Travels and probably the most familiar version is that of Dave Fleischer in 1939.
It’s all about the scary movies this Halloween weekend as Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2 rule the box office. Rarely these days do scary movies scare me and while I have stayed away from the Saw movies (is torture considered scary?) I did see Paranormal Activity 2. It was better than the first but not better over all. Just like in the original Paranormal Activity the best part was the end. But I will give it to the film makers for surprising with the story line. weekend box office estimate Oct. 29-31 Title Engagements Estimated Weekend Box Office 1.
